What is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP)?

An NTP is a nutritional professional certified by the Nutritional Therapy Association to perform functional evaluations for nutritional recommendations for clients. The goal of nutritional therapy is balancing body chemistry and thus creating optimal health and wellness. We do not diagnose or treat disease. Nutritional Therapists are skilled at applying nutrition to balance the systems of the body from a wholistic vantage point.

What does your education entail?

Becoming a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner through the Nutritional Therapy Association requires vigorous coursework including the standard study of anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on the digestive, endocrine, immune, cardiovascular, and detoxification systems of the body. Coursework also includes the the study of traditional cultural dietary practices such as soaking, sprouting, and fermenting grains and vegetables to optimize nutrient and bacterial content. Nutritional Therapy Practitioners are well versed in the study of ancestral dietary practices, the roles of macronutrients and micronutrients in the diet, and the many bio-individual specifics that interplay with dietary choices and approaches. The history of diet from ancient to modern is emphasized, as well as an overview of the work of nutritional pioneers such as Dr. Francis Pottenger and Dr. Weston A. Price. Certification requires compiling a varied portfolio demonstrating the application of nutritional foundations to various health scenarios, counseling multiple clients on functional nutrition practices, as well as passing a functional nutrition exams.

I am a member of the Weston Price Foundation. I am in the process of becoming Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition by the National Association of Nutritional Professionals.
